Saloni Patil

Name: Saloni Patil

Program: MS in Microbiology & Immunology

Academic background:  Hello, my name is Saloni. I came here in Spring 2015 and will be graduating in December 2015. I was always interested in knowing the pathology of various diseases, different ways to prevent and cure them.  I did my undergrad in Microbiology and Chemistry to clear my basics. I have done various short term projects, observer-ships, and certificate courses during my undergrad. The thirst in knowing more led me to pursue a Masters degree in this field.

Experience as student at Georgetown: I feel honored and proud to be a part of the Hoyas. The unique thing about this university is that even if you have taken one program, you can select courses from different programs not only from this university but also from other universities in the area. In my time here, I have met a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures which has broadened my view for not only Microbiology but also in other aspects of life. I have been working part- time in the Office of Transportation Management which has given me a new perspective on what it is like to work in an office setting. All these factors have helped me to recognize my goals and interests in life.

Current academic interests/ foci: Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Mycology, Tumor Biology, Neurology, Molecular Biology, etc.

Advice to Prospective students: As a student, I feel this program is well organized with respect to syllabus. The professors are very helpful; don’t hesitate to ask them any questions. I would also suggest attending lectures for the courses you have selected to decide whether you want to continue with those courses. Usually, the deadline for the add/drop period is 1-2 weeks after the semester has started so you have enough time to make your decision. If you are interested in doing research, there are many professors who may be willing to accept students to work on their projects. Feel free to ask them. There are various internship opportunities available and you can view those on the BGE Jobs Board, which is on our departmental website. Keep all the concepts clear and you will be successful. Wish you all the best!
